A second-generation California native, Stuart Burton grew up in San Diego. Since obtaining his B.A in Fine Art in Painting and Printmaking from San Diego State University in 1977, Stuart has devoted his life to the pursuit of making, promoting and teaching art. Stuart has had over 20 solo shows and his works have been included in more than 45 group exhibitions in California, Arizona and New Mexico.
Since 1980, Stuart has been using the landscape as his primary subject for exploring color, light, and texture in painting. His latest signature landscapes are rich in color and sure of stroke, as are the coastal landscapes series he recently completed for a solo exhibition at the famous Star of the Sea restaurant on San Diego’s harbor. As you view his paintings, it is important to remember that Stuart uses only 5 colors (three primary and two secondary colors) plus white, but never black.
Stuart’s professional skills are not limited to the realm of art making. Through the years, he has been involved in many aspects of art promotion. He has owned and operated Rogue Graphics since l980, and owned Stiff Springer Gallery, where he exhibited many of San Diego’s premiere artists until 1992.He sat on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Art Institute and the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. He currently holds memberships in the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, the Impressionist Society of America, San Diego Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. A popular workshop instructor, he has conducted workshops all over San Diego County. His time is also in demand for demonstrations of his techniques in oil and acrylic painting, printmaking, and for his professional opinion as a juror.
For the past three years, he has devoted a great deal of his time as one of the founders of Arts College International (ACI), a new private fine arts school in San Diego’s artistic East Village. In keeping with his history of commitment to art, this new phase in his career has proven to be one of his most worthwhile endeavors as Director of the Fine Arts Department at ACI,
An avid fan of the Southwest and the state of Baja California in Mexico, he is often on road
trips to document the sights for future paintings. Stuart’s paintings portray the natural land and coastal landscapes in their vivid intensity or subdued power.
Aside from painting, Stuart spends his time with wife, Kathy, their dogs and cats at home in San Diego, and at the stables with their horses JoJo and Albert.
